I’m often asked where I get my traffic from and currently Stumble Upon combined with Twitter are my top referral sites. Most people who read my blog know how much I love Twitter and I have mentioned before on webinars that I’ve held my secret weapon of using Stumble Upon with Twitter and how by using both of them together it dramatically increases my traffic.
There are many URL shortners out there, bit.ly is a very common one – in fact one of the great things about bit.ly is that you can spy on how much traffic your competitors are getting who use bit.ly. To do this you simply put their link in followed by the + and voila you can see the amount of clicks and stats etc. Bit.ly also has a customizable feature which is pretty cool.
But my favourite URL that I personally use is su.pr which is Stumble Upon’s url shortner. This little baby is a very powerful url shortner as not only does it shorten your links as bit.ly does (and of course providing all the usual tracking etc) but your link is also seen by Stumble Upon’s community (currently over 11 million and growing). Whenever I’m posting links on Twitter I use the su.pr shortner and add that to my Twitter update.
You can see here my blog post I did only yesterday has already accumulated 475 clicks in a day – not bad just from combining Twitter and Stumble Upon. Of course it’s important that when you create your link you put in the relevant keywords and review, the more relevant you can be the better results you will have. Su.pr also has a suggested posting time which helps you guage when is the most optimum time to be sending out your updates. You can also schedule your posts to Twitter and Facebook or post now. I personally don’t use this feature though and use Social Oomph to send my tweets out as this is the only tool that sends recurring scheduled tweets. As you can see from the stats below whilst each blog post was written 3 months ago it’s still accumulated quite a lot of traffic and continues to do so. And as I blog most days each post is generating a ton of traffic in fact as you can see from the above stats using this method I’ve accumulated 282766 clicks just from combining su.pr with Twitter. I must admit I don’t use su.pr to post my updates on Facebook, I like to track my Facebook traffic separately and also have found occasionally Facebook blocked or didn’t show the traffic from Stumble Upon – this is rare, it didn’t happen a lot but I didn’t want to take the chance so figured it wasn’t worth it. I’ve always maintained that whilst Twitter is a fantastic tool it’s the tools that you use to work alongside it that can make a huge difference to your social media marketing campaign. Stumble Upon has a host of other features too and is a great social network to find some great content and network. When used together it really does provide a powerful and huge traffic tool as you can see from my stats.
Are you using url shortners? Which one do you use? Please do leave a comment and share what your top traffic resource is too.

Great tip about the Stumble Upon URL shortener and a great article all round. I signed up to SU many moons ago but never really got it. You’ve helped sort that out!
Thanks Dan, my pleasure:) I really love this little url shortner and would recommend everyone to try out and watch their traffic increase:)

Dear Lilach,
It is important to consider your audience as well. If that audience includes individuals working for many governmental agencies, they cannot opened shortened links at work. I alway post each piece on Twitter with the original link intact to allow for this important readership.

Lilach, you were the one to inspire me to use SU.PR and I was really loving it as you know from my previous blog, but guess what? Twitter claims they suspended my account but in fact they’ve shut me down and one of the reasons they gave was that I was using a 3rd Party site.
So I’ve lost all my followers now and am really scared to use any form of 3rd party site to automate again. Have you had or know anyone who has encounter this. I’m not saying SU.PR is the cause but it’s classed as a 3rd party as well isn’t it. Look forward to your feedback.

Thanks Michelle:) I’m sorry to hear about your account being suspended – what a nightmare:(
To be honest I would doubt very much it was from using a url shortner… it may have been from using an automated system or something like TweetAdder? I’ve heard of that before…
I would contact them and ask them and also do a search on why other people had their account’s suspended just to be double sure.

Awesome post Lilach!
i tend to use bitly for the tracking and customization, but the stumple upon route is definitely going to be paid a visit now
Carl.

Thanks Carl:) Yes bit.ly is a good one and one that I occasionally use but most of the time I use Stumble Upon’s as the traffic it generates is awesome – I’m sure you’e love it too:)

Hi Lilach,
I was using the su.pr link shortner on my blog but for some reason it stopped working, I now submit my posts manually which isn’t ideal. I might give it another go as it is great for driving traffic.
Have a good weekend!

Hi Jo:) I’d really recommend you give it another go, the traffic you can get from it is phenomenal:)
Have a lovely weekend too:)
Twitter: lilachbullock
I gave it another go, changed my Tweet Old Post plugin to use su.pr and for some reason the links don’t seem to open… weird!

Thanks, Lilach. Since you reminded me recently of the impact SU can have for a blog, I’ve been using it consistently and the results are fantastic. It really only takes a single thumbs up from the right person and it can go stellar in a matter of minutes.

Thanks for this informative blog and I will check out stumbled upon.
You may like to check out tweet spinner, sendible and hoot suite as this all enable you to bulk upload recurring scheduled tweets. I can’t remember whether social sprout and market me suite does as well…

Hi Lilach, I just tried sharing one of our stories via StumbleUpons shortener and Twitter, and I have one question:
The shortened url links back to http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/APpIxi/www.klikk.no/bonytt/inspirasjon/article740195.ece
To me it seems like Stumble gets the traffic, which was not my intention…;) I hope I am wrong and that this is the way to get more traffic? If not, what am I doing wrong?
Thanks for great post,
Mette

Thanks! Dipping my toe into professional networking with social media, I wasn’t sure what platform to focus on. This seems like the best of both worlds.
Wow – I just tried this and already see a ton of traffic for my link. Thanks for the great idea! Love your blog.

Thanks for the tip about the URL shortener! Stumbleupon is my third best source for referral traffic after Digg and Facebook; so I am really happy with it. Until now I entered the urls manually but I didn’t know it did it automatically this way.
Thanks

I’m not sure this works anymore? When I click on the su.pr link, it just directs me to my StumbleUpon profile. I can’t seem to find where the su.pr tool is located.

Thanks for sharing this. However, I’m not quite sure on how I can use the su.pr shortner. Do I add it before my url (because that didn’t work) and I tried accessing it via the stumbleupon website but it didn’t direct me on how to do it. Would really appreciate your help!

Great article, I couldn’t agree more. Any post or any of my music that has really blown up has been because of stumbleupon. On another note, I wanted to point out that the blue icons linking to your social media don’t really catch my eye or stand out in your layout for me personally. Not sure if you would ever considering altering them.

I did not realize Stumble Upon had this URL shortener–thanks for sharing! I am just trying it out now…Is there a way to bookmark a page just by clicking a button so it will automatically add to your su.pr without having to manually add it in?

I’ve just tried this. I hope I’ve done it correctly; I’m not entirely convinced I have. Nonetheless, I’m very excited to see the results. Thanks for this useful info Lilach.

Lilach, this is really a great insight for me. I wonder if I can pick your brain for a particular hack to use it?
I’m using Buffer, which has two great virtues:
1. It allows scheduling for Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook (of course, so does HootSuite, and I guess StumbleUpon too), and it offers very good metrics
2. It is addressable from Mr. Reader, the reader program I’ve found far and away the easiest to use.
I am of course really interested in the StumbleUpon capabilities.
How can I keep the best of several worlds? I’d particularly hate to lose Mr. Reader. And how easy is StumbleUpon’s interface compared to buffer?
Appreciate any insights you might have.

fantastic advice, I didn’t know about the su.pr shortener! I was generally using bit.ly and owl.ly. Will try out su.pr from now on and see what happens!

Definitely a great tip you gave here! I use bit.ly because it integrates with Buffer well, but I had no idea that Stumble Upon also sent your link out to all “Stumblers” once you send out the shortened URL. I will try it out. Thanks!

I was only using StumbleUpon to view content and after reading this blog I’ve now published my blog on StumbleUpon. Fingers crossed I start getting a few stumbles myself. Great tip about the URL shortener, I normally use the shortener from WordPress. Thanks Lilach
Twitter: jkconsultancy27
I’ve been using bit.ly as a URL shortner for ages, but have never trusted the metrics. For example, I shorten a link to one of my radio show downloads and exclusively use the bit.ly in my promotion. Bit.ly says I’ve had 10 clicks, but I’ve had over 200 downloads since Monday. Something doesn’t add up. For StartupPrincess.com, our highest traffic comes from twitter, hands down. My other sites have such low traffic that its hard to tell.
