Do you ever feel overwhelmed by all the social media channels you have to manage? It’s hardly surprising if you do feel this way. After all, the number of social media platforms is continually growing, and the need to remain an active member of all of them is also becoming evermore significant.
But don’t panic, help is at hand. Meet Hootsuite. Arguably you new best friend. Why?
Hootsuite will help you manage all your social media platforms. This includes: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, WordPress.com, MySpace, Foursquare, Mixi, and Ping.fm.
Rather than having to go through the time-consuming process of logging into each social media platform, with Hootsuite you can manage everywhere from a single place. You can view and interact with all your social media sites and all your activity from a single website. Updates from any of your accounts will appear on the dashboard. You can view entire Facebook albums, send tweets, schedule tweets, track tweets, like posts, send and receive direct mails. The list goes on…You can do most of your social media on this site (though there are certain exceptions where you will have to log in to the social media site itself). Even so, the point remains: with Hootsuite you can manage most of your needs without having to log in to various sites. A much better system than the previous system of having to log in to every site separately.
Furthermore, you can customise Hootsuite to meet your needs – for instance, you can control what you want to see.
The system is especially useful if you regularly post the same content on all platforms. It’s possible to send your blog posts (those automatically created from an RSS feed) to any or all the social networks you choose. You can also schedule social media posts to be automatically sent out at future dates/ times. So you don’t have to be constantly logged in to keep up with business.
If your company has several people managing the social media accounts, Hootsuite has some features that can help you with this – Team members can receive access to the social accounts without needing to know the passwords, and status updates, mentions, retweets, replies and direct messages by your customers can be assigned via email to specific team members to deal with.
Hootsuite also allows you to monitor your brand and track your campaigns. You can also create professional customised reports on your social media activity enabling you to analyse and adapt your campaigns accordingly.
You can use Hootsuite anywhere. It’s is available on the web, or on iPhone /iPad /Blackberry /Android apps.
If you’re tempted by this exciting product, there are 2 options. There is a basic plan which is free. But if you really want to maximise the benefit of this product, you should purchase Pro plan which is $5.99 per month. With this you can have unlimited social media accounts, the full report builder, and include one team member. (Contrast this with the basic version where you are limited to 5 social media accounts, there is no support for team members, and access to reports is limited). The time you will save using pro plan makes it worth paying the extra. Once you’ve signed up there is plenty of online help and guidance to enable you to make the most out if this product and to help you if you ever get stuck or are confused.
Overall, Hootsuite is a vital tool for anyone serious about utilising social media in their business. It enables you more effectively to view, share, network, manage, monitor, and respond to vast huge volume of information received through social media channels.

Excellent blog post Lilach.
Hootsuite is the ultimate control panel for monitoring your online activities , with some very informative metrics to help you gauge the effectiveness of your online presence

Thanks Steven, nice to see another fan. I actually now couldn’t manage my social media without Hootsuite!

I guess I’m what you call a basic user, so would love to hear more about the more advanced features you allude to Steven. A blog post or two in there for sure
The advanced features are what I use to promote all my magazine blogs Dan, I am allowed unlimited feeds and even Kevin has access to his account and mine for just $6 a month. I can post to multiple locations from one but I still think Steven should write a post for you

I figured it would be in the paid version and have actually been considering it. Maybe now’s the time to bite the bullet!
But yes, Steven you need to do a blog post
Thanks Sarah – It seems like a no brainer to me:)
Twitter: lilachbullock
No harm trying – and yes I agree – Steven please can you do a blog post:)

I’ve been using Hootsuite for ages and it’s so much better than Tweetdeck. Must get round to trying it on a smartphone, but will need to wait for a new phone as my Blackberry screen is dying and a pain to use.
Keep the great articles coming Lilach
Thanks Dan, actually I started off using Tweetdeck and then stumbled upon Hootsuite and haven’t looked back. It’s so much easier the interface, and as I manage multiple accounts it performs much more efficiently.
Twitter: lilachbullock
I was using Hootsuite very happily until I started noticing that the impressions on Facebook from Hootsuite links are about 1/3 of the impressions I get when I post directly. No one sees Hootsuite links. It works well for Twitter though.
Thanks Eleanor – have you tried contacting Hootsuite’s support? I must admit I only use Hootsuite for Twitter and directly login to Facebook to post. Haven’t had any problems with Twitter and you’re right it does work well for that.

Hi Lilach,
Thanks for sharing the HootSuite story! We’re happy to see you using the dashboard,
Thanks Andy, nice to see you here:) My pleasure, I’ve been a fan for a long time:)
Twitter: lilachbullock
Thanks Lilach,
I like Hootsuite, but like you I use it just for Twitter. Still monitor my mentions with it, but have switched over to Buffer to schedule my retweets. Saves me a lot of time.

Thanks Bob, I actually use SocialOomph to schedule my scheduled tweets and Hootsuite to manage everything and send “live” tweets.

Thanks Lilach – Must admit I didn’t have the foggiest what Hootsuite was all about. Seen it referenced all over the place of course – Been meaning to check it out for ages. So thanks for a nice conscise explanation. I’ll add this to my list of things to check out further

Thanks, Lilach. I’ve started using Hootsuite and love it! One thing I find missing is a link to Google+ . . . or is Google+ too new for Hootsuite?
Twitter: LaRaeQuy
Thanks LaRae yes currently Google + isn’t part of the social networks, let’s hope they add it soon as it’s very much needed as more and more people are using Google +
Twitter: lilachbullock
Google+ isn’t included as part of the free or Pro account – Hootsuite has made it available only to Enterprise users.

Hi Lilach,
I love Hootsuite! However, I feel it’s so important to maintain a good balance between automated posts and manual posts on social media. When I see Twitter and Facebook accounts that are completely automated with HootSuite, I often think that the owners are not personally engaging and interacting with their audience?
Do you agree?
All in all, I think HootSuite is a worthy tool, and even one to outsource in itself (which saves us even more time), but it should never take the place of real interactions and presence online!

Justine Simard (SpunkeBusiness) recently posted..Getting Your Small Business Online in 7 steps.
Thanks Justine, I completely agree. It’s so important for people to understand that it’s not just about distributing their updates but they also have to respond and engage with their followers. When you get a good combination of both the results are so much better.
Twitter: lilachbullock
Hi Justine
A very good point and I agree totally. I hope you don’t mind me saying Lilach but when I see your tweets I have always got the feeling that they are automated…. just some feedback for you
Saying that I am learning a great deal from your posts so will continue to follow and read your valuable contributions.
Gavan
Thanks Gavan, I use a mixture of automated tweets and “live” tweets, I find that the combination works brilliantly for me.

I have been using Hootsuite free version for a while on PC and Android phone. Recently started on iPad whe it is very easy to flick through streams. Great that it is in the cloud and your dashboard is replicated on all devices.
I use it for reading lists and searches e.g.anyone tweeting about MindManager. These are grouped in to several panels.
When tweeting I can send to one or more of Twitter, my Facebook profile, two Facebook pages or LinkedIn. This works well.
Great application and post.
Andrew Wilcox recently posted..Mindjet have released Connect SP – a SharePoint Solution Package
Thanks Andrew, the free version is excellent I must admit. It’s nice to see you’re using it to it’s full potential, I predominantly use it for Twitter rather than Facebook and LinkedIn.
Twitter: lilachbullock
Hello Lilach. You know, I’ve never read a post that explains the benefits of Hootsuite so well. I am very tempted to go and check it out. I like that there’s a free version, but what is great about it is that multiple team members can work on the platform at the same time. Also, being able to manage multiple social accounts from one platform/screen is a major plus. Speaking of plusses: THIS JUST IN! I am under correction, but I think they are incorporating Google+ as we speak. Great stuff!

Thanks Brian, my pleasure:) Awesome news about Google + I’m sure it will be a welcome feature. I highly recommend you check out Hootsuite, use their free version first and if it works well for you then you can decide to upgrade.
Twitter: lilachbullock
Hey Lilach!
Yes I love using Hootsuite. Right now I only have need of the free features, but (hopefully) I will grow to the point where the advanced options become necessary for me. It’s great to know it’a all available.
I just love keeping track of my lists and various chats in columns, it would be pretty unwieldy without it!
John Garrett recently posted..[COMIC] JG’s Vacation part 2!
Thanks John. Yes I love Hootsuite too, it definately seems to be a favourite amongst us twitterers:) I’m on the paid version now but only because I need to manage multiple social networks. You can try the paid version for one month so at least you can see if it’s worth the extra $6 a month or not.
I couldn’t manage without my streams!!
Twitter: lilachbullock
If you use Hootsuite in it’s free version, the features that you can use is very limited.
Well Joseph I used the free version for a long time and was quite happy with it. If you manage multiple accounts and want to see reports then the paid version is the way to go.
Twitter: lilachbullock
Hey Lilach!
I used to use Socialoomph(aka-Tweetlater) with pingfm but they just got too expensive. I’ve been looking for a good replacement since. I’ll have to take another look at Hootsuite. Do you know if they allow you to post to Google +? I’m surprised that pingfm hasn’t added them as of yet.
Ted Peterson recently posted..Top Tips for Generating Leads at Trade Shows
Hi Ted, I actually still use Socialoomph (to schedule my tweets) and Hootsuite to manage my twitter. I understand that they’re integrating Google+ as we speak although not sure how long it will take before it goes live…. I guess we need to watch this space – I’ll keep you posted though of course:)
Twitter: lilachbullock
We use Hootsuite exclusively. One thing we learned early on was to use the integrated ow.ly to shrink web addresses instead of going to one of the others and having to sign-in (ie bit.ly). It also is worth the monthly fee for the added analytics.
Thanks Joel, I actually use Stumble Upon’s shortner and will be writing a blog article very soon as to why. I’ve tested a few of them out and found this the best one.
Nice to see another fan of Hootsuite:)
Twitter: lilachbullock
Looking forward to read your post about advantages of Stumble Upon URL Shortener.
Thanks Miles, actually I’m pleased you reminded me:)
Twitter: lilachbullock
Hey Lilach! I love my Hootsuite basic. I use it mostly for Twitter but I do have streams set up for Linked In and Facebook to keep an eye on what’s going on. I also love my Buffer, especially now that it’s possible to post to both your Twitter feed and your Facebook Business Page.
Jo Shaer recently posted..Social Media and Industrial Relations
Thanks Jo. I haven’t used Buffer actually, I may look into it and see if that’s worthwhile.
Twitter: lilachbullock
I’m curently using Tweetdeck, would you say it would be advantageous to change to Hootsuite?
Thanks Suzanne. If you’re finding Tweetdeck is working well for you then that’s great. I like the customisation features for Hootsuite and the analytics are very good. You could always try it and see if it’s better for you. I originally used Tweetdeck for quite a while and then tried Hootsuite and found their features better for me. Their interface is nicer too.
Twitter: lilachbullock
I’m with Lilach on that one.
I also used to use Tweetdeck but I found the pop up every time someone on my list tweeted very irritating – it was noisy and took up too much of my laptop screen because it was constantly on as I have a big list.
Jo Shaer recently posted..How To Get Top of Google For FREE
Thanks Jo, yes I forgot how annoying that was with Tweetdeck!
I wonder with the recent sale – Twitter bought Tweetdeck if they will make many changes, I’ll be interested to know how that develops.
Twitter: lilachbullock
I love Hootsuite too and I have been using the free version which is all I need for now. It makes things so much easier when you can have columns. It took me a while to finally use Hootsuite and once I did, there’s no turning back to Twitter web.
Twitter: SophiaMcI
Thanks Sophia:) I too used the free version of Hootsuite for a long time. I only upgraded as I manage many accounts and also like the analytics:) I can’t remember the last time I actually went to Twitter…
Twitter: lilachbullock
I absolutely love Hootsuit. It really makes managing social media easy. Taking out the paid version is really worth it for the Bulk scheduling feature. Thanks Lilach for yet another useful insight
Twitter: tycoonwoman
Thanks Tycoonwomen. I use their paid version but only because I manage multiple accounts. I don’t use it for their bulk scheduling feature, I use another tool to manage that:)
Twitter: lilachbullock
Great post on Hootsuite!
Yes I love it to.
The way you can schedule your updates and even save them to post them at another time is great.
I use it to schedule quotes and it doesn’t take long at all.
Thank you for sharing this.
Have you considered the digg digg plugin?
It makes it easy for people to share your posts and gives social proof.
I will pingfm this.
cheers

Pingback: Vital Twitter Tools for Managing Twitter Better
Great summary of Hootsuite, sums up all the good things.
I often use Hootsuite for live tweets as well (sometimes even if I have twitter open), as I find it easier to check my post and to change the order of RTs or shorten messages, if necessary.
For a while some colleagues I had shared responsibility to manage our twitter account and Hoosuite worded perfectly as you can see what and for when the other person has scheduled.
Great tool.

Thanks Sabine:) Yes I use Hootsuite for live tweets, in fact I rarely actually log into Twitter and send my tweets from there:)

I am trying to revive our NGO’s social media presence.. We’ve got some good engagement on our facebook page so thought of moving on to twitter as well… Was exploring various social media dashboards that would allows facebook, twitter, linkedin etc to all work together and make life easy but as Eleanor also pointed above Hootsuite doesn’t work well for facebook as all posts from hootsuite get bundled together..
Just came across this study: http://www.insidefacebook.com/2011/09/06/hootsuite-tweetdeckdecreases-feedback/

Hootsuite is a fine management tool but that doesn’t mean you should use it for everything. A Porche is great on the highway but you wouldn’t go off-roading with it. If you want to get the most out of Twitter you need a tool designed for Twitter. Ours has the best search engine out there, a cloud-based AI search mechanism that analysis twitter conversations and makes alternate suggestions, remembers responses to use again, and even displays engagement levels so you can see which responses work best. Unless, of course, you’re happy just MANAGING that Twitter account. We prefer to see our clients reach out to new customers, respond to mentions, and even track brand and product conversations. And we’re free. Email me for more info: morey@itweetlive(dot)com
