What everybody ought to know about Social Fixer for Facebook

Social fixer is a little known but very useful tool for all avid users of Facebook. I’ve been finding Facebook extremely busy and even been missing out on stories since they made their recent changes and was delighted to be introduced to this great little tool by Tina Thinkinnewareas Jonasen.

What is Social Fixer?

Social fixer is a browser extension that works with your existing Facebook account. It improves the Facebook site by eliminating annoyances, adds lots of great features, and enhances functionality. This all adds up to a better Facebook experience.

What does it do?

Social Fixer gives you the ability to separate your Facebook news feed into tabs. When you read your news feed, your posts are conveniently separated into tabs. You can read all the relevant information on that group then catch up with others later. So if you are currently only interested in catching up with what is happening in your family then you can view that tab which will display only the related feeds of this group.  I’ve found it helps keep you much more focussed and reduces distractions. It also saves time and frustration of finding the information you are seeking as well as making everything much more organised and manageable which of course helps you to be better organised as well.

Key features

  • Define your own rules by moving stories into separate tabs so they are logically grouped to suit you.
  • Tabbed news feeds. Your posts can be moved to tabs so they can be grouped and classified. You can leave the posts that you’re most interested in on the Home tab, and move others to a tab to read later.
  • Advanced feed filters – Get more full control by choosing which stories you want to see and which you want to hide. You can specify specific rules such as hiding a particular type of story, if it is posted by certain specified users, or if it contains certain key word(s).
  • Hide posts that you have already read. With social fixer you can mark posts as “read” – either individually or everything on the page. On your next visit they will be hidden. So no more shuffling through what you have already read. But when new comments arrive you can (optionally) make the post visible again so you can see the new comments. Alternatively you can mute the post so new comments don’t show or set a threshold of comments.
  • Automatically remove recent activity from your profile. This helps to maintain a clean profile and ensure your random activity on Facebook stays private.
  • Customise and personalise your page through skins – if you’re bored of blue and white you can customize your Facebook by changing the colours, layout, styles, and images used.
  • When you hover over thumbnail images on Facebook, Social Fixer will automatically enlarge the picture. So you don’t have to click on each image to view the full picture.
  • Quick links to your most important pages and events. Navigation panels are provided with links to all the pages you “Like” and your upcoming events.
  • Notification of people that un-friend you.
  • Automatically retrieve older posts.

The best bits

  • It is free.
  • It runs in most browsers.
  • Easy and quick to install – Installs in just a minute.

If you want to take Social Fixer for a test drive install it here.

What do you think? Have you found Facebook too busy with the recent changes?  Are you using Social Fixer?

Thanks again for a great article! I shared this on my big Facebook page. I have two separate ones, because I didn’t figure out groups till I had separated them out. I still like having two separate pages, but I am excited to have just downloaded this extension. Love reading your blog, and yes I am still here from yesterday reading! So much information!
