The secrets of how to be successful in business

Here’s an interesting question….What do all successful people in business share?  Luck? Lots of existing capital to invest? Genius/natural intellect/business acumen? Good education? Guts? Drive? Hard-work? Believe it or not the latter three things are actually the most deterministic on one’s business success.

Two people that I know provide an excellent example of what I mean. Sarah is very intelligent, has lots of money, but lacks the motivational drive. Becky is very hard-working, innovative, and driven but she was not born rich nor was she top of the class. Who is more successful? Becky. There are loads of other examples of people like this in business (Think of Richard Branson – He did not have the most obvious starting path to become a millionaire). Most people do not have an easy ride to success.

So what can you learn from this? One thing is for sure – Successful people are not born lucky. They create their own luck – by seeking opportunities, going beyond what they are required to do, trying new things, believing in their own ideas, developing close networks with others, etc.

Of course, once you have become successful, it’s easier to become more successful because, yes, you have more capital, you have proved yourself so have more belief from those around you who are willing to assist you, etc. But this is not the reason they continue to be successful or became successful in the first place. The reason they are and remain successful is because they maintain a hardworking, innovative, and determined attitude to succeed further. Indeed, the road to success is not easy.

How can you better assure business success? Be positive, proactive and progressive. And always remember the following ………

  • You are successful now – Remind yourself what you have achieved so far and how far you have come.
  • Face your fears – Don’t ignore a potential threat. Investigate it further and face it straight on. Even better if you can transform a threat into an opportunity.
  • Take more risks – People don’t get far plodding along.
  • Wherever you are, believe in yourself, don’t give up, and keep working hard. It will pay off.
  • Success breeds more success. Once you have made a breakthrough more success will come your way. So keep fighting on.

For inspiration, read my blogs or books, as they offer loads of tips and tricks on how you too can exceed your potential. There are lots of other inspirational sources. Consider people that have made it – How did they do it? Also, keep up to date what is happening in your industry – Because new consumer and industry trends could offer the source of inspiration that you need to make it.

Ultimately, believe in yourself and remember anyone (including you) can make it – but it doesn’t come easily – you have to work hard and create your own opportunities. If you expect success to be handed to you on a plate, it will never arrive. If you make an effort, you are certainly on the real road to success and you will be at your destination before you know it.

It’s amazing what you can achieve when you break things down into smaller chunks. Some people expect “luck” to come to them. Others put the hours in, and doggedly get things done. You made a great point Lilach

Thanks Catherine. Yes so many people think people who are successful are lucky. But we have to make our own success. I recall Yo Sushi entrepreneur Simon Woodroffe saying “if it all went wrong I could earn a living just talking about how it went wrong”

Guys! Drive! Hardwork! I would add determination and persistence. I really agree with what you are saying here. I think the beauty of online business is we are really the masters of our own destiny. If you are prepared to learn, work hard, experiment, and stick with it, you can succeed. It isn’t easy but the pay off is worth it, and the fact is it’s a fantastic job where you can do from anywhere. Love it!

    Hi Lilach

Thats a great post you have made and it hits the problem spot on.

Way too many people are complaining that they dont have any luck, and they never get a break.
In my opinion it is a matter of being curious and follow up on things that look interresting to you, and when you do that sometimes you are LUCKY and discover some possibilities that you otherwise wouldn´t have know about.

    Kim

    • Lilach says:

Thanks Kim. It’s interesting how people complain and yet if they spent that energy on creating their own luck the difference they would have. You are right, curiosity is so important in business, by having an open mind can lead to discovering new possibilities that in turn can be a fantastic opportunity.

Lilach its great to find another blogger who inspires others through positivity. The two things i blog on the most are to believe in yourself and never to give up. It is the strongest message you can give anyone, and i’m so pleased to see you advocating this. You are a great motivator!

Thanks Larry for your kind words. It’s also nice to see a fellow blogger who has the same mindset. People often give up too easily in this industry. They think it’s easy but we all know it’s not easy but by working hard and preserving you can have huge success. Of course it helps having a good mentor to motivate you:)

Good post, Lilach! Agree with what you say, and like how you balance realism with positivity – I often find discouragement is a major problem for start-up clients (and me too!) – and your bullet points are relevant and true! :o )

    • Lilach says:

Thanks Claire:) I think it’s about getting the balance right, it’s great to be positive but you also have to have realistic expectations:)

    Interesting post Lilac :)

I have come up against many hurdles but then hear people encouraging defeat rather than positivity.

I happen to love what I do, and I think that really helps through the tough times. Keeping on going, always adding to my backpack to help me keep on track :)

Thanks Anita. In life, personal and business we will always face challenges and hurdles, it’s how we deal with them.

Positive energy is a must and can really help motivate you. I’m not an advocate of “giving up” however I do think that sometimes the business model may not be right, so either changes are needed or it’s time to try something new.

  17. Anita says:

Sorry Lilach. I am typing on mobile and accidently miss-spelled your name – sorry.
