Smart video marketing is a long term strategy and one of the most powerful marketing channels that we have online today. First and foremost, video marketing is where the industry is headed. It will take your business to the next level. If you do not feature video in your online marketing strategy, then you may have to watch painfully as your competitors speed ahead via the digital waves.
To succeed you will need to create visually stimulating and dynamic videos that will motivate your audience to react in the way you desire.
You don’t need a huge budget or timescale to get the results you need… just follow our top tips below
1. Camera
Purchase a good portable camera. You do not need to spend hundreds, but research the best product per price range. Ensure the camera has a USB port to enable you to upload videos easier. You may find a tripod or stand useful. Ensure the positioning is at a good level for the body and face. Practise to achieve the correct angle.
2. Setting
Create a simple, tidy setting, which is easy on the eye. Although this may not seem important, presentation is vital and also reflects the quality of your brand. If you are at home, it is not necessary to sit at a desk, a well presented lounge area may work too. A plant or vase of flowers may compliment the shot.
3. Lighting
It is vital for the quality of your video to have the correct lighting. When filming away from natural light ensure you have light pointing towards you, which illuminates your face softly. You can use good quality home or office lamps if your budget is low.
4. Sound
Ensure your microphone levels are on point. Make sure that no external sounds are audible. If you are at home ensure you have a quiet environment to work within.
5. Killer Headline
Your headline is crucial to the video’s success. Make sure you use ‘key words’ in your title with the ‘benefit’ to enable Google pickups. The headline may be a question or a relative or unique subject to attract the audience you need. Remember, as a marketer you must tell your audience what they are going to get out of the video, it is all about them.
6. Content
Like any marketing strategy, the most appropriate content for your chosen audience is essential to success. What do they want or need to hear? In the first few seconds you should communicate how your viewer will benefit from watching. How are you going to help them?
Make your content catchy, powerful, fascinating and valuable. You need to be as natural as possible. Don’t use a script but plan ahead, knowing what key points you need to convey via an outline. In some cases, when making sales videos, you can create prompts across the screen to remind you. Always be genuine, at ease and be as honest as you can. This will instil trust in the viewer and encourage relationships to form as they will feel like they know you.
7. Personality
Captivate your audience with your personality and mannerisms within the first few seconds. This is the essential time to attract and retain their attention. Ensure they get to know the real you and find a way to give them the information they need in a way that they will relate to. Use your personality traits to your advantage. If you are humorous, integrate this into your words. Imagine that the camera is a colleague or friend. Look into their eyes constantly and engage them throughout. Make sure you practice until you are confident enough to create a positively engaging video.
8. A Clear Call to Action
It is vital to tell your audience what you want them to do next. Have a clear placed call to action at the end of the video. Do you want them to post a comment or share the video with their personal network? Do you need them to visit a certain website? This is where you can measure your video’s success. If you have edited credits then make sure your call to action is stated as well as the verbal call. You must get a reaction.
9. Edit Your Video
Editing your video is essential to looking professional, but keep it simple, smooth, clean cut and tidy. Try not to use music, it is often unnecessary and can be an irritation to your audience.
10.Share Your Video
It goes without saying that you need to share your videos to get the results you desire. The more sites your video is viewed upon, the more traffic and money you will make. What great leverage! In a matter of minutes you can record a dynamic video and years later it will continue working for you, still creating traffic and magnetising leads back to you.

Really great blog post. I recently started doing more videos on my channel and all of these points that you made were very good. For my camera I use my Iphone 4 which I love or my macbook camera. The lighting and the sound are two of the biggest issues that I always run into and make sure that they are fixed before I do a video. Great content.
Hi Justice
Thanks for your great feedback. How do you find your Iphone 4 camera? Looking forward to watching you videos.

An excellent point to accompany a fantastic post. Theres no denying it, video is phenomenally powerful and an invaluable tool for those looking to succeed in todays online market. Creating your own videos is a great way to help bridge the gap that naturally exists between supplier and customer. Creating engaging videos that both educate and insight users to action are a fantastic way of establishing your position as a thought leader and authority on the subjects you’re talking about.
Collecting and curating your videos into channels and playlists and combining with similar videos from other people as Nathan suggests is another key approach which serves multiple purposes. It not only gives your users more valuable content to consume, which in turn increases their dwell time and interaction on your site, but it also lends greater credibility to your own videos, positioning them more as a got-to resource and less as a one-sided marketing/sales pitch.
A great post Lilach, Kudos
Thanks Oojal:) I agree, video marketing is incredibly powerful and is becoming more and popular as more people are seeing the benefits.

lilach,
just what I needed, all I have to do now is act natural and not be nervous when in front of a camera!
Steve-o,
One way of dealing with this is to create slide-based videos with your voice only. These types of videos are also very popular and can be just as helpful as a live person video. This way, you can train to be a better public speaker preparing yourself for on-camera work while still jumping on board the video revolution.

Michael I agree, this is a great way of dealing with it. I actually like a combination of slide-based videos as well as seeing the person. I’m more of a visual person anyway so it helps me.
Plus by having a slide-based video you can read from a script and gradually build your confidence.
Not to mention it’s particularly useful if you’re having a bad hair day:)

Steve everyone has some nerves. It’s natural and with practice you’re gain confidence and start to enjoy it:)

Hi,
Thanks for the tips. Very helpful they are. I have been thinking of making a video but the problem i’m facing is: Publishing the video. Though facebook has a good reach, is there any better and effective way to reach out to customers? No matter how good the video is, if its not reaching the audience then its a waste. Please help.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks Ankit, there are many sites you can publish your video too. I would start with YouTube first. Also, it’s a little pitch but when it’s ready http://www.networkwaves.com you’re be able to submit videos to.

Yes! Someone mentioning the importance of *sound* in videos. If viewers can’t hear what you’re saying clearly you’re shooting yourself in the foot.
I blogged about how to get better sound recently:

One of the important things of the video is the call to action. When creating a video for marketing purposes one should be aware of the message to communicate. Then what you want to the user to do after watching the video. Is it to click a link, visit a website, add a email to a list etc.
I’ve seen many marketing videos which are really great. But they fail to make the user do that next action.
