The Apple that Bites Back

Apple users are in for a nasty surprise when the new operating system goes live later this year. ISO 6, the next version of the operating system for the mobile devices in the Apple stable will be missing the now familiar You-tube app. Post introduction of ISO 6, (its currently available for developers and will be released this autumn (October)) if you want a quick and convenient way of accessing your you Tube content on your phone as opposed to going via the browsers, you will have to make an extra visit to the App Store and download the new You-tube app.

So is this yet another less than amicable parting of unhappy bedfellows? Earlier this year we saw LinkedIn and twitters sign their decree absolute. As usual the matter in the gutter puts the blame on both sides – and, irrespective of which side you choose to take it seems clear that both Apple and Google are less than sorry over the split. Weighing up the evidence, a judge would be likely to include the Apple had been exhibiting unusually cruel behaviour towards Google for some time. Earlier this year, Apple announced that it would purge Google maps from the next operating system. If truth be told, Apple has actually been a pretty poor custodian of the Google flagship application. The iPhone/iPad app has lacked the finesse one would usually associate with Google and this is most likely due to the fact that Apple, not Google have been responsible for the You-Tube apps maintenance and updates for the past 5 years – a requirement of their agreement. This lack of control prevented Google using it app for advertising, so now that Google has control. They are free to monetise the new you tube. Whether or not the benefits of the anticipated improved features outweigh the intrusion of the adverts for users, will remain to be seen. It’s likely that the verdict on the split will be irreconcilable differences; with both Apple and Google being secretly pleased that they have greater freedom outside of an unhappy union then within it.

From the customer’s point of view is this likely to be a deal breaker for loyal Apple users? Unlikely! Apple fans appear to have an amazing capacity to put up with less than market standards and still profess undying love for their pet gadget. Remember when you couldn’t forward text messages or cut and paste?! Not to mention the fiasco with the antenna on iPhone 4. Clearly the rest of us have a lot to learn from Apple about creating unshakeable brand loyalty.

For the Apple-philes here are the other exciting changes in iOS 6

Major overhaul/upgrade for Siri:

Much more language capability – not quite I Robot but getting there; You can now get sports game updates, make restaurant reservations, watch movie trailers, launch apps and tweet by voice. And for all those jealous feeling left out iPad users’ iOS 6 finally makes Siri available for the iPad.

Integration with Facebook

Facebook gets the Twitter treatment and will integrate with iOS 6 in a similar way to Twitter which got integrated in iOS 5.

New Phone App Features:

You can now set reminders to call people back, send messages instead of calling, apply a DO NOT DISTURB feature that does not alert you with notifications.

iCloud Tabs:

iCloud Tabs will integrate Safari across all iCloud-connected devices, allowing users to go from device to device with the same internet browsing tabs remaining open on each.

Mail VIPs:

Want a way of screening out everyone except the people you want to connect with ? iOS 6 Mail VIPs will enable to users to mark certain contacts as important, and in turn, all their messages will be starred.

FaceTime over 3G:

Now you don’t have to wait until your love one is on a wifi to see their pretty face. I0s 6 has FaceTime over your phone network.

Photo Stream:

Easy photo share with your friends and family.

Maps:

As mentioned Google Maps is out and in comes Maps made completely in-house. There are also un confirmed rumours of 3-D maps, with geographical features interlaid on traditional maps.

Guided Access:

Guided Access allows you to lock an app when it’s in use so that other controls won’t be accessible.

Passbook:

Get all your passes in one place, including boarding passes, tickets, and coupons.

Hi Ola, Great summary of the changes to iOS expected soon. I usually find that as soon as Apple announces what will be provided to us in the next version of iOS, I can’t wait to get the new features. But this is the one time where I’m not so excited. I like Google Maps and have a difficult time believing that Apple’s maps will be superior. I know I can still use Google Maps, but that means another app on my iPhone and I don’t want to load it up with too many apps.

Will people be hesitant to upgrade to iOS 6? Time will tell!

      Hi Carolyn
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I share your misgivings about whether the Apple Map app will trump Google, after all Google have mapped the world! Unfortunately even if you don’t want the new iSO you will eventually have to get it as once all the developers have updated their apps to work with it unless you update too you will find things just don’t work! Apple do have it fans by the short and curly’s !

  2. It’s interesting what you’ve said about Apple users blind faith in Apple – even when it doesn’t deliver. I’m not an Apple fan. I’ve never had an iphone – and right now, I can’t see that changing. I suppose I am notoriously brand unloyal – I’ve never had the same brand phone 2 contracts in a row. I DO currently have two HTCs, because I chose a work phone the same brand as my personal phone to avoid a steep learning curve. I don’t own any Apple products except an ipod nano, and that’s probably for convenience because my husband is an Apple fan and it means we store our music in a central library. I would like a tablet, but never had any interest in the ipad. I suppose rabid Apple loyalty puzzles me. I just don’t get it.

      Hi Ciara

Thank you for your comment. I totally get your lack of understanding as to why Apple fans are so loyal. Well if you would really like to know what the appeal is, go into an Apple shop and get them to let you play with an IPad or a mac book or the Iphone – I guarantee after that you will get it. :)

    Ola,
Good review of the upcoming changes to the iPhone OS. I was in the phone industry when the first and second iPhone came out, so I’m well aware of the brand loyalty of iPhone users.

I agree that even if the changes cause some inconvenience, brand loyalty will keep most of their customers. I tend to think that Google being a separate app with Google control will probably be better for the customers in the long run, since Google will make the app more useful without their hands tied.

Personally, I’m a Linux and Android fan, so don’t use iPhones, but I like to keep up with the technology advances.

    Good posting,

It’s not just Apple that plays catch-up with basic features. As someone that owns mountains of gadgets, they’re all exactly the same – in that key features are initially omitted in the rush to market. Sony PSP was the same. RIM Playbook – same thing. MS Windows – same thing. To claim that this is an Apple problem is just plain silly.

    Your other points are valid.

    • Ola says:

      Hi Menachem

Thanks for your thoughts. I wasn’t claiming that this was only a problem with Apple – the post was about the relationship with Apple and Google not a review on how technology providers bring products to market. That said it would be interesting to see how loyal the users of the products you mention are to these brands if they don’t give them what they want!

  5. Hi Olam,

Yes – I do agree. A lot of people who is loyal Apple fanatics have been upset by the news that YouTube app won’t yet be available on the new ios operating system. But I’m sure at the end of the day if the consumer wants something – they will be sure to get it, or get an alternative. As simple as that.

Good article because of how detailed it is, the different areas it covers. The blind faith for apple i think is just related to adhering to a certain image, portrayed to people through marketing.

  11. Suzanne says:

Ola, Yes, I have noticed that apple fans “put up with less than market standards” as you say. My husband has been on an apple since they came out in the mid 80′s. He’s willing to put up with these issues because he’s a rabid fan. He also pays a TON of money for his computers and monitors. I must say though, I am ready to go over the fence and abandon my pc for the apple. Thanks for a nice roundup of the new features. Suzanne

I am a long time Windows girl who now owns a mac as well. I also have an android tablet and use to have an android phone (I have now gone to a basic phone, as I don’t see the point of a smart tablet and a smart phone). I don’t get the Apple obsession. They are pretty devices, but as a person who now bounces back and forth in the Windows/Mac world I don’t see what makes Apple so much better.

And the maps thing is just STUPID, Google is king of the maps war, because it can do more than driving directions. If I’m taking public transportation in a strange town or looking fo a bike route away from heavy traffic, guess what, Google has me covered. When another map can offer these things THEN it can beat google maps. The smartest thing google ever did was partner with public transportation systems. It really sold their appeal to a wider audience.

  16. Asbjorn says:

Totally agree. Very difficult to find a brand loyalty like Apple’s.

Hopefully Apple will approve a Google Maps app for IOS 6 in time.

The present version of Apple Maps is a bit limited when looking at street maps in Europe.

Will be interestingto see how that turns out.
