How do you feel about pop ups? The answer to this question is rarely a neutral response. After all, pop up’s are controversial and very much like Marmite – they are loved by some, and hated by others.
But pop ups don’t have to be annoying, irritating or intrusive. In fact, if used effectively they can actually be quite useful.
Pop up’s are a great way to build a list. The proof is in the numbers. Whether you like them or not, you generally achieve better results by using pop ups than not using them.
So perhaps you’ve decided to use pop up’s as part of your marketing strategy. What next? How do you actually create effective pop ups rather than irritating ones?
Is Pop Up Domination worth considering?
Pop Up Domination is not just any generic pop up tool – it is different. And it actually delivers results.
Popup Domination is a premium WordPress plugin that enables you to create professional, attractive light box popups that are proven to increase opt-in email list conversion on your blog. The professionalism and attractiveness of your popups is very important and will help you gain even more subscribers.
What are the benefits of Pop Up Domination?
- Pop Up Domination is highly customisable (but it is still very easy to use) – So you can style the pop up to match the look of your website. You can choose the exact look and colours you want. With 7 themes, 15 different colour combinations, and 5 different colour buttons, there is plenty to choose from. You can also customize: the title, a short paragraph, the footer note about privacy, the image and the submit button.
- The scheduling tab enables you to determine when, where, and to whom the pop up will be shown. You can select exactly which pages/posts you want Pop Up Domination to show up on. You can choose to display your pop up everywhere, or select on entry or exit from specific pages, or only in category pages, etc.
- You can chose to only display Pop Up Domination once you receive a certain number of impressions from a particular user.
- You can preview your pop ups – See how your Pop Up will look like before making it live on your website.
- You can use Pop Up Domination on any website. Pop Up Domination also works with most mailing list providers include Aweber.
- Pop Up Domination is quick and easy to set up. After a few layout and design decisions, you are all done. The free installation video makes it even simpler – it shows you step-by-step instructions on how to install and use Pop Up Domination.
Does Pop Up Domination Deliver?
I’ll admit I’m a huge fan and user of Pop Up Domination I have found it delivers results. I’ve tested it – turned it on and off to compare my subscriber rate and found when it was turned on my optins increased by 30%.
Whilst some people do find pop up’s annoying the great thing about Pop Up Domination is that you can choose the frequency of how often it pops up.
It’s important to remember that the key to having a successful pop up though is by providing a valuable gift and highlighting the benefits of why your reader should provide their email address.
If you’re looking for a pop up that works well with Aweber and your WordPress blog, I highly recommend you check it out here
Whether you love em or hate them I’d welcome your comments.

Really interesting article, Lilach. I am not a fan of pop ups at all – find them quite annoying and generally avoid using them on my sites or my clients’ sites (although your statistics mean I’ll definitely have to reconsider their use!!) – having said that, since I really enjoy your content and regularly find it very useful, the repeated pop up definitely doesn’t put me off returning to your site – and that goes for other blogs I read regularly. Thank you for making me think again – and giving a more balanced view that I can share with clients! :=)
Claire recently posted..5 Twitter Tips to Get You Noticed
Thanks Claire, really appreciate your comment:) It’s such a tricky one, I must admit I have mixed feelings about them. They work. I guess the key is to ensure you provide really good content so that your reader doesn’t mind too much, after all they can simply hit the x and it disappears. I decided against having a exit pop up as they really do annoy me!

I think Pop Ups are like the advertisements on TV. When you watch some movie and then you get some product advertisement to see. It is a mass media. As Advertiser you do not exactly know who will use your product or service, but after some reasearch on internet the target group will be achieved. And if the customers will not direct use your product, still they will know about your existence.
Thanks Pavel:) It’s interesting how so many people find them annoying and yet after 2 or 3 visits they tend to optin. I guess it’s like advertising as you say, people need to see something a few times before it registering and them taking action.
Twitter: lilachbullock
Really interesting article and some great stats. I don’t mind one pop-up but a bombardment of pop-ups drives me crazy.
Is it possible that people just think the pop-up will go away and stop reappearing if they opt in? Are these people just as valuable as people who opt in because they want to?
To play devils advocate: I read your newsletter because I wanted to opt in the very first time I saw the newsletter pop-up but on sites where I feel forced or pestered to give over my email address I just hit the delete when stuff crops up in my inbox. If I hadn’t wanted to read your newsletter I may have subscribed at a later date anyway in the hope that the pop-up would stop but I would just direct the newsletter to spam when it arrived.
Surely when this is the case then the subscriber numbers are irrelevant figures and the more telling figure is who opens the newsletter after receiving it.
Hi Lilach,
Great article, thank you!
I haven’t yet met or spoken to anyone yet who actually likes the experience of pop ups but some of these people actually do use them on their own blogs! I think they’re totally acceptable really and it’s very interesting to see your 30% increase there.
Right now I don’t have one on my blog (just an optin on the sidebar) but I did try Popup Domination and agree its a great product if anyone would like to try it. I might well switch mind back on sometime soon after reading your post!
Kind regards,
Rob
Thanks Rob. It’s such a mixed subject. People love them or hate them – I’m not a huge fan of them but at the same time if I’m not interested in the offer I’ll simply hit the x button. It won’t make me leave a website, what does is if the content isn’t good or of interest to me.
Pop up’s do work though and if you’re looking to build a list it’s a great way to do so:)
Twitter: lilachbullock
hi Lilach, pop-ups definitely are the ‘marmite’ of the internet world! – Trouble is I’ve never yet met anyone who likes them (except the owner of the blog of course)!! Even most people who use them admit to finding them annoying when they go to other people’s sites. However, there is no denying that they vastly improve opt-in rates. You mention a 30% increase. From the people I’ve talked to that sounds about right. So I guess it’s a case of ‘learn to love it’.
I definitely agree it’s important to customise them so they don’t appear ‘in your face’ at every turn
Great stats, thanks for reporting.
ps, love your little ‘more in’ article ‘pop-up’ that appears on the bottom right after you read a post – is that a plugin too?
Mandy Swift recently posted..Video Marketing Secrets – Why is Your Background So Important?
Thanks Mandy. Well I don’t love them either – what I do love is the results though:) Yes I appreciate it’s very contradictory of me but at least I’m honest! They work, as I’ve said I’ve turned them on/off, changed the frequency etc. and the differences have been huge. As long as I’m not annoying my readers I’m happy:)
The pop up at the bottom is a plugin as well. I’m going to be writing a blog about my favourite plugins so will add that to it and then your’e know all my secrets:)

I tend to agree with the comments above. I really don’t care for pop ups, and I usually don’t even look at them. I find that they interrupt my reading, and I want to get back to the reading. I do however love the slide in window on the bottom right. The movement grabs my attention, but it’s not intruding on my reading space. I’ll often glance more than once at them. I find I stay longer on blogs that have those because more interesting posts are coming to my attention. How do you get one of those?

Thanks Rachel, appreciate your comments. For me it’s more about the content on the website, if I don’t like the pop up I’ll just push x although if I like the content I’m more enticed to just optin.
The slider at the bottom of my window is a plugin. I’m actually in the middle of writing a blog post on my favourite plugins so will reveal all very soon:)

I don’t use pop-ups on my website. IMO, I don’t personally like them in the sites that I visit, and figured that my customers might not like them too. I do have enough engagement widgets on my sidebar.

No, I don’t have them on my site. Taking cue from the more popular sites in my niche, they seldom have pop-ups. Why should mine have them?
jim syyap recently posted..Free offers and changing brand names
Thanks Jim. I think it also depends on the website you have, your target audience and what you want to achieve. I want to build a list and this for me is a very good way to do so. And I’ve found a lot of the sites that I visit do have them…
Twitter: lilachbullock
Hi Lilach,
I am annoyed by pop up newsletter forms, especially the larger ones. But, I have never used a pop up form on my site so I can’t really say that I wouldn’t like it on my own blog. Who knows, maybe I will try pop up domination some day.
Justin recently posted..Mazzastick.com’s Guide 4 New Bloggers eBook
Thanks Justin. I too don’t like the larger ones, they “too in your face”. I resisted using Pop Up’s for a long time. I heard from a few people the different in their subscriber rates and decided to experiment and try it… within a day I was shocked by increase. I think it’s worth experimenting and if it really annoys your readers too much you can either change the settings or remove it. You’re never please everyone so for me the majority rules:)

Ha – made me laugh – I started reading your post and then, low and behold, the plug in was demonstrated to me live – yup, your pop up, popped up. Just a fleeting Grrr, one click of the mouse, and I bid it bye bye! I’m not a fan either, and didn’t even know what plugin to use prior to reading your post – but am now more wiser. Great share. Thanks Lilach

Thanks Fiona and Scott. I have to admit whilst I’m not the biggest fan of them I genuinely don’t see what the huge problem is, if you don’t like it, simply hit the x button and carry on reading. If you’re intrigued and want to sign up it takes 2 seconds. Pleased you found the article helpful:)
Twitter: lilachbullock
Good timing just today I wrote a post on some annoying things that work on the web and this was one of them (I’m with you, I say go for it). I also had a client ask about setting one up on their site today so very timely I was looking around for a solution as I built my own for my site and it was a bit of a pain. Good to see it works with mail chimp as well.
Dan
Thanks Dan:) I think it works very well for certain sites and it really does depend on what your goal is. For me I want to build a list so it works really well:)

This is a great post. I think I have refused to put the Pop-Up on my blog because I absolutely hate it on others. It is totally irritating but i do see the value. You make good points here
. Your blog is very welcoming

Suha Sagban recently posted..Developing the will of iron
Thanks Suha:) I’m very indifferent to them. I can see how they annoy people, I’ve been to many sites and they’ve annoyed me – but I think if you provide good quality content that is helpful to your readers then there is a lot more understanding and not only that but they are more enticed to actually complete the form, particularly if they are repeat visitors.
Twitter: lilachbullock
I also have pop up domination but right now have it turned off for testing and tweaking purposes. What’s interesting though is when I first started tesing it out, I didn’t receive much of an increase thought I did change my offer so that may have had something to do with it. It’s all about testing, tracking and tweaking

Oh and your little “slide through” pop up is GENIUS! Can’t wait to hear more about it

David Sharp recently posted..Network Marketing Success Do Not Fear Failure!

Thanks David:) Yes it’s interesting isn’t it, a lot of us don’t like them and yet they work. I think you have to go where the majority rules and at the end of the day the way I see it is, if you’re providing great content and giving then why not give people the opportunity to opt in. If they don’t want to they simply hit the x button. It certainly hasn’t effected repeat visitors – if it did I would seriously consider turning it off.
Twitter: lilachbullock
I’m one of those who has that irritating large pop-ups because I’ve found it relays my message better. Will definitely consider Pop Up Domination, of course. As pesky as these things can be, there is no doubt that they do work.
Twitter: Juli_Becker_
Thanks Juli:) I would recommend testing it and change not only the frequency but also the length of the pop up and even go as far as the gift or your offering. I’ve found that can make a difference too. For example when I just had it set to receive my newsletter although I got optins they weren’t nearly as many as when I offered my Traffic Ebook.
Twitter: lilachbullock
Wow…30%!?!
Like others how commented above, I’m not a big fan of popups. In fact, I have gotten in the habit of identifying the X very quickly and not even taking time to view the content of the ad. But I can’t argue with 30%. Maybe it’s time to reconsider and start some testing to see whether the are worth giving a try.
Thanks for the result. I, too, am looking forward to the blog post on the popup in the lower-right corner.
–Sean
Thanks Sean:) I think for me it’s also because I get a lot of repeat visitors, I wouldn’t be surprised if next time you visit you’re tempted not to press the x on the pop up:)
I will be posting out the blog this week, just working through my favourite plugins as we speak…

Interesting read Lilach. I decided about a mobnth ago to install pops on my website but kept toying with the idea and never got around to it but reading your comments has definitely helped swayed my decision to instal them.
Thanks for writing such great articles!
Twitter: sandrajcoach
Thanks Sandra, my pleasure:) Make sure if you do install it that you test and tweak it and also have a good gift too. I found that when I was just offering a sign up to my newsletter less people signed up than when I had my traffic ebook

Hi Lilach,
“Whether you like them or not, you generally achieve better results by using pop ups than not using them.”
Well! I thought I only knew this secret that I have been using for last 10 years!
I can vouch that 80% of my sales comes from my opt-in list generated through popups. Not from any SEO tactics, google adwords, social media or any other marketing channel.
Courteously — S. Kumar
Thanks:) Pop Up’s have a great conversion rate but I do think it depends on the type of website and the audience and also the content you’re sharing:)
Twitter: lilachbullock
I’m still here . . . on your blog . . . increasing the stick time even more to an average of 8 mins now lol
Is that pop up dominator in action too?
And I’m here reading this lovely promo post as I was lured by the popup in the bottom right hand corner of my screen – very effective indeed
Thanks Lilach.
I am leaving your blog now!
Cheers

PS: I’m curious to know why you don’t you make your hyperlinks open in another window so that you blogpost stays open for longer?
Fiona Scott recently posted..What would having an Online Home Business mean to you?

Thanks Fiona wow 8 minutes, I’m impressed:) The pop up at the bottom is another little plugin I use and I’ll reveal that one in my favourite plugins post soon:)
You’re absolutely right – I thought I had got my hyperlinks to be open but clearly they’re not so thanks for highlighting that for me:)
Twitter: lilachbullock
I did have one on my blog for a while but I did a straw poll and no one liked it, so I removed it – it wasn’t even an opt in form! If everyone says they hate them but conversions improve, who’s actually telling the truth? Personally, they get in the way of my reading but I am now so used to clicking the x button that I almost expect the irritation.
Jo Shaer recently posted..How Does Twitter Work?
Thanks Jo, appreciate your comment. I’ve found that whilst they do annoy some people the majority are OK with them and I have to go with the majority. I have mixed feelings. I don’t like exit pop up’s, they annoy me and I decided against putting one on my blog. If I visit another blog and they have one I simply push the x button.
I decided to keep it on my blog as when I turned it off I noticed a huge different in my numbers. When it’s on I simply get much more subscribers so for now whilst it’s not annoying too many people I’ll keep it on, if that of course changes I’ll reconsider.
Twitter: lilachbullock
This is a post I am definitely interested in (actually, all your posts are interesting to me), but I too hate them. It seems right when I’m in the middle of a sentence, this “thing” gets in the way, and click – it’s gone. I don’t even take the time to read what’s on the pop-up, so I wouldn’t opt-in. As the others have said, I also look forward to the slide-in box information. Can’t you put an opt-in on that as well or is it only for mentioning other posts.

patrick recently posted..American flag
Thanks Patrick. Whilst I’m a huge fan of pop up’s as they work incredibly well for me there are many factors to think about. You need to be providing value on your website and think about a gift you can give away – not just an optin to your newsletter, gifts always get better results.
Twitter: lilachbullock
I’m surprised you say that the majority say they don’t mind pop-ups, I’m afraid they annoy me too! However your articles are always interesting and very useful, so that kind of outways the annoyance!
Twitter: VASussex
Thanks Sue:) That’s the trick, provide great content and value so that you don’t annoy your readers:)
I find the majority of my readers are OK with the pop up, if they don’t want to see it they simply hit the x button.
Twitter: lilachbullock
Pop ups are like being shouted at in the street by a drunk sales person who is demanding you go into their store.
They make the surfing experience distracting and they treat the consumer like a gullible idiot who just needs persuading to buy things they weren’t looking for in the first place.
You may have noticed that I don’t like them.
Twitter: johnrockley
Thanks for this wonderful post Lilach. I use to always wonder how doesn’t my email marketing service doesn’t offer such professional looking pop up forms. Now I understand what that is. Like many other said, I have always considered pop ups to be annoying to my visitors, but now after reading your post I will certainly give it a go again, since it’s the results that matter at the end. Thank you!

Hi Lilach,
I’m a Pop Up Domination subscriber too. Actually, that was the 1st premium app I purchased!
I think that it was one of the best ways I started to listbuild. It was cool to be able to set the timer as to when it would pop up. I know some people may have been annoyed with it, but I did not put it up for them if you know what I mean!
I think that people’s response to a Pop Up has a lot to do with how good our enticement is. First thing we need to do as marketers is to learn the skills that make the magic. Copyrighting is at the top of that list! Good copy and a decent offer just might get the opt-in.
By the way, have you seen Super Pop Up? It’s similar to Pop Up Domination, but it’s actually free. I’m rocking that one on my blog these days and playing with what offers go up there. It’s a little different than Pop Up Domination in terms of customization aspects, but it’s a nice way to mix it up!

But sometimes it can really be annoying too…

I really don’t like popups because they get in the way of what I came to see. If they pop up when I first visit a website I usually leave without reading anything. If they come up on the exit then at least I was able to see what I wanted to see. Either way I completely ignore what is on the popup itself. I believe that blog writers attract readers who are like themselves, so I don’t use popups on my own site.
I do like the slide-in that some websites haves in the lower corner. They don’t get in the way, so I can still do read what I wanted to see. The movement catches the eye. For a visitor like me they are much more effective.

I hate them, but given that I usually subscribe if what I read is interesting then it might be a matter of personal preferences. If your content is good I’ll subscribe without pushing.
I know that pop ups increase the number of subscribers but it would be interesting to know if they are active subscribers or not. If they interact or if they’re just in for the freebie and so pretty useless on the business/partecipation side.
