5 Crazy Ways To Get Buyers To Your Website

“If you build it, they will come.”

This is a famous misquote from the movie Field of Dreams.  The original quote was: “If you build it, he will come.” But people began to replace “he” with “they” to fit their own lives.  Now it has taken on a life of its own…

The moral to the quote is – if you put the effort into creating something, then, it will be appreciated by people JUST because you put the effort in.

You build a pool.  People will come and swim in it.

You build a zoo.  Tourists will come to admire the wildlife.

You build a playground.  Children will come to play.

You build a business.  Customers will come to buy.

Part of this is true, but it can be misleading.  Yes, you do have to build something BEFORE anyone can come and appreciate it.  There is, however, much more to a successful business than just building and waiting.

If you build it, they won’t necessarily come.

Let me ask you this:

You have the greatest and latest whatchamacallit or thingamabob, and there’s no reason why anyone would not buy it!  But how will you get people to your website?  How will they know you exist?  Just building a website and putting it on the World Wide Web does not secure your business’ success.

Many will say:

“I’m going to test different AdWord campaigns until one works.”

“I’m going to try different sales copy until it converts.”

“I’m going to post different articles on my blog and get blog comments and reviews.”

“I know a friend that can help me get noticed on Twitter and Facebook.”

“We don’t need to find customers…  We are going to have affiliates and let our customers sell for us!”

And so on and so on.

I’ve heard them all, and I’ve heard hundreds more.  Truth be told:

Building an online business with no set plan on how you will drive targeted traffic and get raving prospects to is like flying a kite on a windless day.  You could adjust the tail, change the design, run faster, but without a kite to sweep the thing skyward nothing would happen.  Many try to sidestep this fundamental, but simple, task.  Instead they tinker and tinker, trying to force the kite upward, always failing.

I’ve written a free Ebook that will show you how you can create your own wind to get your kite skyward!

Lilach – I’ve noticed you and your level of activity for a while, although I’ve only very recently got around to checking you out. I’m really impressed with what you are doing and achieving with your social media marketing. The very fact that I am here right now proves that social media works! So many marketers give up with social media because they are not getting the results but they simply don’t do “enough of the rights things” for “long enough” – It’ s probably taken me perhaps 9 months to a year to have a proper look at what you are doing, during which time your name kept flagging up…

You started this post with the quote: “If you build it, they will come.” I, and I’m sure many hundreds (in fact with you thousands) of “friends” “followers” etc are testiment to that fact that “If you build it, they will come.”

Great post as always and (to anyone reading this) – make sure you get Lilach’s free ebook – “5 Crazy Ways to Get Buyers to Your Website” – You’ll be glad you did (as long as you impliment the advice of course).

Thanks David, I’m truly humbled at your lovely comments.

You are spot on re marketers giving up and often it’s because they don’t really try and don’t spend enough time on it. It’s taken me nearly 3 years to get to my level in social media, in terms of knowledge and also followers/contacts. It doesn’t happen overnight, but if you get the strategies in place you can have amazing results and as an added bonus meet some great people:)

Hi Lilach, I think you are absolutely correct. Too many people who start out in this business make the mistake of thinking that if they just setup a website then they will be able to make money. They forget that they need to verify if anybody actually wants to buy their products or services in the first place.

    Great post yet again.

    All the best

Thanks Alan:) Yes you’re right, it always amazes me how people don’t have realistic expectations. What also saddens me is people don’t focus enough of their time and energy on getting traffic. What’s the point in having a fabulous website if no one is looking at it?

I’m glad that you mentioned “Targeted” traffic and not just traffic. I’ll run into people that are like why aren’t I getting results even though I have good traffic? Well, if your traffic is made up of people that like dogs, it won’t matter how much traffic you are getting if you are sells cats.

Thanks Duke, spot on! So many people are obsessed with traffic but they forget the one simple rule – it has to be targeted. Otherwise you simply won’t get any results. And we all no a business without results = no profit :)

  11. I’ve been getting a lot more traffic by commenting, Lilach. Oddly (or maybe not so oddly) the traffic is coming from search engines, well, Google. It doesn’t seem to matter where I comment. I use CommentLuv premium. If you just build a blog, he won’t come. If you comment, they will come.

Yet again I find myself loving your post. I agree 100%, though most people never even go through the trouble of getting people to their content. Sadly I see many blogs that lay there abandoned by their owners because they never are able to build traffic to it. I love your approach to it, and I look forward to reading more from you.
